January 5, 2006 : Innovate or dissipate says Council on Competitiveness

Friday, January 5, 2006

Strengthening the United States science and technology talent base, or “innovation leadership,” is key
to keeping pace with nations like China, according to a report by the Council on Competitiveness. Its
Innovate America report is the product of extensive research and forms the basis for legislation
introduced by Senators John Ensign (R – NV) and Joseph Lieberman (D– CT) in December. The National
Innovation Act of 2005 is intended to define the government’s role in innovation development, acting
upon the Council’s recommendations. These include the development of Regional Innovation Hot Spots
and the creation of a new type of masters degree called a Professional Science Masters.

Deborah Wince-Smith, President of the Council and member the Board of Directors of the NASDAQ
Stock Market, will be in Columbus on January 12 to discuss the organization’s work. She plans to
address U.S. long-term vulnerabilities and economic strengths, international competition and the
pending innovation legislation. Dr. Karen A. Holbrook, President of The Ohio State University, will
give opening remarks. This event is presented by the Columbus Council on World Affairs in
partnership with CompeteColumbus and the Women Presidents’ Organization. It is sponsored by
Nationwide, with support from T.W. Ruff.
